3. Research areas:

  • Research, development, and application of biological assays in the field of bioactive compounds; testing and evaluation of microbiological indicators.
  • Research on the isolation, characterization, and structural identification of biological molecules (proteins/enzymes, peptides, etc.) and biocatalysis.
  • Application of biotechnology in the research and development of products for daily life and technical economic development.
  • Participation in consulting, training, and international collaboration in related fields.

4. Main achievements:

Researchs and international cooperation:

The Department of Experimental Biology has presided over a number of international and national cooperation projects, including: Collaborated projects with German institutions (International Institute Zittau of TU Dresden, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology): “Study on diversity of micro-organisms in tropical seaweed systems and screening of their potential biotechnological use” (2016-2019); “Tropical algae-based products for application in natural cosmetics” (2019-2020).

Collaborated projects with Hungarian institutions (Szent István University): “Study on mycorrhizal fungi to develop products to increase the quality of medicinal plants and the productivity of some agricultural plants” (2011-2012); “Research and development of microbial preparation (endophytic fungi- AMF and soil microorganisms) to improve root disease resistance and provide nutrients for coffee, pepper and maize” (2019-2022).

Project under the bilateral cooperation program with Belgium institutions (Ghent University): “Valorization of Lignin by development of selective enzymatic degradation, chemical catalysis and separation of innovative chemical Bio-Aromatics, VALIMATICS” (2018-2021).

Collaborated projects with institutions in The Netherlands: “Research on chemical composition and biological activity of some medicinal herbs and marine organisms in Vietnam” (2003-2005); “Metagenome study on rhizosphere microorganisms of turmeric and coffee plants for enhancing yield and promoting plant growth” (2014-2018).

In addition, the Department has managed and participated in projects under National key programs (NAFOSTED Fund, KC.09, KC.12, Program 562, Agricultural and Aquatic Biotechnology Program, etc.), as well as projects under ministerial, provincial and institutional programs.

  • Products of application and implementation:

From the results of research projects, the Department has developed a number of functional products to improve health, support immunity, enhance liver function, lower liver enzymes, and reduce oxidation, such as: SK Gold Cordyceps; Bioglucumin and Bioglucumin-G

  • Education and training:

The Department of Experimental Biology has participated in educating and training both under- and postgraduate students by cooperating with educational institutions. The Department's staff has actively supervised 12 PhDs and 10 MScs, and is currently supervising 02 PhD and 03 master students.

  •  Awards:

The most significant awards include: The third-class Labor Order award for individual (Prof. Dr. Le Mai Huong), the State Prize for Science and Technology in 2012, the Vietnam International Techmart Award in 2015, Gold and Silver Medals at the Korea International Women's Invention Exposition in 2018, the Outstanding Scientific Work Award of Hanoi National University in 2008, etc. The Department’s staff is annually evaluated to accomplish their task well and excellently.

5. Publications:

In the past 5 years, from 2020 to 2025, the Department of Experimental Biology has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in international journals SCIE/Scimago/Scopus and domestical articles, 08 patents, 03 monographs and 01 reference book.
